2000s: A Musical Retrospective in Real Time: Mayer Hawthorne

January 12, 2010

Part of what made compiling my “Top Ten” list of the ’00s so hard was the full knowledge that there were still tons and tons of albums and artists that I didn’t come across or didn’t give full attention to. In honor of those countless many I decided to start this series of posts that will cover releases from the ’00s as I find out about them.

It has only been a week or two since I discovered Mayer Hawthorne but I am really digging his album, A Strange Arrangement. Soulful but with a definite hip-hop influence, Mayer Hawthorne, whose real name is Andrew Mayer Cohen, captures the ’60s Motown spirit so well that you’d think you were listening to unreleased Motown material.
