2000s: A Musical Retrospective in Real Time: Meret Becker

January 20, 2010

I love finding music I haven’t heard before, especially when it’s good. Released all the way back in 2001, Fragiles by German actress/singer Meret Becker is a wonderfully dark record that mixes smokey theater ambiance with poetic noisiness. Sonically, Becker’s music sets a eerie canvas of noise over which Becker whispers poetry and occasionally sings. One of the things that’s really interesting (to me, anyways) is the juxtaposition of song lengths. Short musical moments less than a minute long are placed between 7 or 5 or 3 minute compositions. Not sure what it means yet, but perhaps in a couple more listens it’ll make more sense. For a taste of the album check out the samples below.
